FES Broward Chapter is taking MATHCOUNTS by Storm
The FES Broward chapter is proud to be encouraging academic excellence in mathematics among
6th, 7th, and 8th grade students by sponsoring MATHCOUNTS.
MATHCOUNTS is a year round program. During the fall, students and teachers use materials
distributed by this chapter prepared by leading math educators. The training through the fall and into winter leads to the selection of school MATHCOUNTS teams, which eventually compete at the regional
competition February 21, 2004. Winners from this competition earn a free trip to the state competition and state winners earn a free trip to the national competition
in Washington D.C.
Hundreds of hours are devoted to MATHCOUNTS each year by volunteers from the schools and this
chapter to ensure a quality program. Because of a strengthening program started by Peter Moore the past few years, attendance has significantly increased. We are anticipating well over 20 schools
participating from Broward County reaching well over 200 students this year. This would make participation for the Broward County section one of the largest in Florida and one of the largest in the Nation
What are we doing? All schools in Broward County have been notified of the program and sent informational packets. We are beginning to follow up with all schools to help with registration. With
over 150 private and public schools in the County, this is a rather large task. The registration deadline is December 14, 2003 with the competition being held February 21, 2004. Assistance is still
needed with media relations, coordination of events during the competition arrangements for lunch to be prepared the day of the event. We would welcome your assistance whether it is for
several hours a month and/or helping the day of the event. If you are interested in getting involved in a program that is geared to challenging students and is rewarding please contact Steve Sharkey at Ssharkey@c3ts.com
Get in. Help out. Make a difference.
