A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Terrance N. Glunt, P.E.
Broward Chapter President, 2002/2003

Everybody that really knows me well understands that I have two passionate hobbies in my life; music and ice hockey! As dissimilar as they may seem, the success of both revolves around teamwork. Although the strengths and weaknesses of each are based on the specific skill levels of the individuals in the band or on the team, it is the combination, and interaction, of individuals that, in part, determines their eventual success. And it is this teamwork that makes the group appealing to their fans.

We in the Broward Chapter have taken a great leap forward this year with our goals of increased community service and financial success towards our scholarship program. We have the most aggressive agenda and budget that we have ever had and we believe we have the team to pull it off. That team includes all of you. But, it takes more than teamwork to create fan appeal and that is the problem that your society faces.

Just as in music and sports, the engineering profession is constantly guarding against the old “what have you done for me lately” syndrome. Even though we have had great success in the past, the Broward Chapter needs to continue to grow and broaden that team concept in order to constantly enhance our image in the community. We do not want to give the impression that we are a “one hit wonder” based on our success with the Lauderdale Manors playground. We are so much more than that.

What we do want to do is continue to reach out and help the community in ways that will promote engineering and allow others to see that we are not self serving, but instead are team oriented. We need to start inviting the non-engineering community into our world. And if they don’t come, then we need to go to them. This has already started through the publication and distribution of our new and improved Newsletter. That is why we have increased the circulation to include, in addition to Society members, all of the elected officials in Broward County. In this manner, we can begin to show those individuals in positions of authority just what we are capable of doing as a profession.

To take it a step further, we have invited the Honorable Broward County Commissioner, Lori Parrish, to be the guest speaker at our upcoming November lunch meeting. And in keeping with our intentions of giving back to the community, the topic of discussion will be how FES can work with Government, especially with policy makers, to develop ideas and action items that can directly improve life for everyone around us. You should not miss this meeting.

I would also like to thank all those involved with our recent Scholarship Golf Tournament, and especially Bill Francis, the tournament chairperson, for making it one of the most successful scholarship fund-raiser events in Chapter history, netting over $5000 for our annual high school engineering scholarship.

Thank you all for making FES both fun and rewarding. See you at the next meeting.
